Who am I? Perhaps, this is the only question life really throws at us. To get the right answer on this question could take whole our life. Who am I? Who will I become? What is my path? These are questions, which make me to think about life.
I’m quite hard working person. But like anybody else, I do my work with full performance, if only I am interested in these things. I read a book about people’s behaviour and nature, and there was a paragraph: ‘’People are able to work 12 hour shift without feeling tired, if only they enjoy the process of work’’. Also I like drawing using different kinds of software, creating new things, re-design existing brands, create posters, advertisements. These things I can with pleasure and without feeling tired for quite long period. But the main area of my interest is packaging g design. During two years studying on HND Graphic Design course I practiced a lot creating packaging projects, researching about this industry, visiting exhibitions, interviewing other designers. Also I visited company ‘’Chesapeake’’, which making packaging for many businesses all over UK and Europe. They specialize on packaging for such products as: tea, coffee, chocolate, whisky, Easter eggs. I interviewed very experienced designer who took me through every process in their factory and showed me how everything work. He told me, that when they get a brief from customers- it doesn’t really say what kind of design need to be produced. Very often customer asks for new ideas. I think, this is the most difficult to create completely new design in 8 hours. Much easier to re-design existing packaging. But from other side- their duties are- to come up with ideas of new product design and to create it in Photoshop or Indesign. All other work made by machines, which cutting packaging whatever size needed. I think, this resolves a lot of problems, because if creating packaging manually – takes quite long time. But what about thousand cartons? I created packaging designs as well and to be honest, I spent more time cutting and sealing packaging than creating design.
Another place I visited during my study is Creative Advertising Agency- Poulters, which specializes on packaging for food products as well as posters, advertisements, corporate ID guidelines. They do a lot of packaging for dog food, spreads for wine. I think, the main problem in all design companies is the time limit, because sometimes they have to do so much work, but the deadlines are so tight. During my visit to design company I received a lot of historical evidence of food packaging. How food packaging looked like many years ago: in 50’s, 60’s, 70’s. All designs are different and suitable for that century. Also I read magazines about food packaging, how it evolved during the centuries, and what we can do to make packaging more recyclable. I visited websites, where I found information about food packaging functions and role of packaging. The main role of packaging is preventing loss or damage to the packaged product. Another website was about Japanese food packaging. They have different style of wrapping food. Almost all their packaging is natural. Japanese wrapping their food with leaves and straws, what is very healthy. Also I visited websites to find out more about food packaging history or about current product designs on the market, some designing websites to find the latest packaging examples.
